Southwest Sheep & Solar

Providing full service vegetation management across the Southwest with a focus on prescribed solar sheep grazing

MANAGED GRAZING FOR SOLAR FACILITIES

Vegetation management is a constant part of operating a solar facility. While there are many traditional methods of managing vegetation, such as mowing and spraying, solar sheep grazing is an underutilized tool in the toolbox of vegetation management.

Sheep thrive where mowers can be cumbersome and hard to operate, easily navigating beneath and between panels, eating unwanted vegetation while returning nutrients to the soil through their droppings.

Southwest Sheep & Solar is a customer-first vegetation management service that designs site plans around customers' needs, adjusts stocking density and grazing duration, and adds traditional management methods like mowing when applicable.

Why Sheep Work Well on Solar Sites

Properly managed sheep can reach vegetation throughout a solar array while allowing the property to remain in agricultural use.

Access Around Infrastructure

Sheep can graze beneath and between panels and in areas that can be awkward for larger equipment.

Continued Agricultural Use

Solar grazing keeps land in agricluture, helping improve public perception of utility scale solar sites.

Reduce Herbicidal Spraying
Grazing reduces the need for the regular reapplication of potentially harmful herbicides.

Less Repeated Mechanical Work

Grazing can reduce how frequently mowing and trimming are needed as part of the site’s overall vegetation plan.

Flexible Site Management

Stocking rates, timing, and animal movement can be adjusted as vegetation and site conditions change.

Mitigates accidental damage
Reducing the use of mechanical mowers lowers the overall risk of property damage during vegetation management.
